Kini Roundup: Amanah makes moves on by-elections, victory for news portals

Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Amanah makes moves on by-elections

Amanah tells PKR not to quit on negotiations with PAS on the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, despite PAS continuing to insist it will not make way for Pakatan Harapan parties.

Amanah, a PAS splinter party, also says it will contest the Sungai Besar by-election, and has shortlisted its president Mohamad Sabu, deputy president Salahuddin Ayub and former Perak Menteri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin.

However, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said there is still room for discussions with PAS to avoid three-cornered fights as nomination day is on June 5.

Malaysiakini wins gold mine defamation case

Independent news portal Malaysiakini wins the defamation suit brought by gold mine Raub Australian Gold Mining (RAGM) at the High Court.

This is the first time the defence of reportage is accepted by a Malaysian court in a defamation suit.

At the Court of Appeal, Free Malaysia Today saw victory when a High Court decision siding with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in a defamation suit against the website was overturned.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak also fails to obtain a summary judgment against PAS organ Harakahdaily over an article on his stepson Riza Aziz. The case goes to trial.

Other Kinibites

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes laments that Tourism Malaysia chairperson Wee Choo Keong has always been anti-AirAsia, following a report that Wee destroyed the airlines’ buntings at an exhibition in Beijing.

Wee responded that he only requested them to be moved to the back as they were overshadowing Tourism Malaysia’s buntings.

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli says he will surrender to the party president all evidence he has on the claim that bribes of cash and “women” were sought from those wanting to deal with the Selangor government.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be campaigning against BN in the two by-elections, says former Umno man and key Citizens' Declaration figure Khairuddin Abu Hassan.
