PARLIAMENT Deputy Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said all parties need to ensure that 1MDB will not borrow from public funds to save itself.

"On the question raised that funds from public institutions are used to save 1MDB, I feel that every one of us has the responsibility to make sure that 1MDB no longer borrows from them," he told the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time.

He was responding to Mansor Othman (PKR-Nibong Tebal) who said the 1MDB fiasco should not burden the public where public funds are used to repay the debts of 1MDB.

Mansor even pointed out that 1MDB should not use the fund from Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).

Johari, however, claimed that 1MDB had to repay all its local short-term debts.

According to Public Accounts Committee (PAC), 1MDB's debt has accumulated to RM50 billion as of January 2016.

1MDB needs to service the interest as high as RM3.3 billion to repay its mature debts between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015, according to the PAC report.

Johari claimed the failure of Edra Energy's initial public offering (IPO) and the negative perception surrounding its lands development were among the challenges faced by 1MDB.

The rationalisation plan of 1MDB included selling off its energy assets, Bandar Malaysia land and debt-asset swap agreement.

Following this, he said, 1MDB has RM2.3 billion cash to repay its debts for the Tun Razak Exchange project.
