Divine retribution, jail for football fan, Felcra foots RM687m building bill

Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Amanah leader says Kuala Kangsar polls ‘divine retribution’

Perak Amanah chief Nizar Jamaluddin told a political rally the Kuala Kangsar by-election was divine retribution for BN top guns Najib Abdul Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for their role in toppling the Nizar-led Pakatan Rakyat Perak government in 2009.

The Kuala Kangsar by-election was triggered by the death of incumbent BN MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad in a helicopter crash on May 5.

In response, Zahid said he was not surprised that Nizar would say such a thing and urged him to repent.

Zahid also urged Kuala Kangsar BN grassroots to bury any ill-feelings about the decision to field Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar’s widow Mastura Mohd Yazid on the BN ticket.

Teen football fan goes to jail for offending TMJ

Teenager Muhammad Amirul Azwan Mohd Shakri was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to insulting Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim in Facebook postings.

Former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim, however, argued that Muhammad Amirul should not have been sent to jail since it could be his first offence, and he was unrepresented.

Felcra promised free building, saddled with RM687m bill

Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra Berhad) is footing a RM687 million bill for a new headquarters on its prime land on Jalan Semarak, despite earlier agreeing to provide the land in exchange for the building constructed by developer WZR Group.

The mixed development project included a 35-storey office tower, a 43-storey residential tower and a retail mall, with Felcra getting 12 floors and WZR recouping expenses by leasing the office and retail space.

However, Felcra is now forced to bankroll the project because WZR was unable to raise the necessary funds. The landowner is now the developer, while the developer is project contractor.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he assumed all was fine with the project as there were no complaints.

Other KiniBites

US investigators are probing Goldman Sachs Group Inc over 1MDB-linked transactions, including US$3 billion raised for a real estate project, some of which allegedly ended up in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s bank account, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Langkawi MP courts netizen ire again, this time with a posting claiming that government funds do not belong to the people, because once tax is paid it no longer belongs to the taxpayer.

De facto law minister and PBB’s Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri said she will not support the Private Member’s Bill to amend Act 355 to expand syariah court jurisdiction and pave the way for hudud. She will not be attending the voting sessions, she added.

Touch 'N Go Sdn Bhd clarified that the overcharge of about RM50 for a toll costing a fifth of that, experienced by a road user, was a one-off glitch.

Looking ahead

It’s Day Four in the two-week electoral campaign for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.
