SG BESAR POLLS DAP Sekinchan assemblyperson Ng Suee Lim has hit back at PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan for kicking up a fuss over his plans to celebrate an Amanah victory in the Sungai Besar by-election with beer.

Ng said his message was directed at non-Muslims, and there was no intention whatsoever to incite Muslims to consume alcohol.

"Even the late Nik Aziz Nik Mat said you can't stop non-Muslims from drinking.

"So if Ng Suee Lim wants to drink until his stomach bursts, don't you disturb him," Ng said, referring to himself in the third person.

Nasrudin had said the DAP assemblyperson's plans to celebrate an Amanah victory over PAS with alcohol was arrogant and "a slap to the face of Muslims."

Ng however said that the drinking was in the event Amanah won in a difficult three-cornered fight, where BN had an advantage.

He added Nasrudin's remarks smacked of hypocrisy, as the Islamist party had assured non-Muslims that syariah law would not affect them.

"But when we want to celebrate (in our own way) you question it.

"Maybe if I said I would celebrate by fasting to give thanks (puasa sunat) they would be okay with it."

Ng, who speaks fluent Malay and Javanese, said he grew with Malays in a kampung and has always respected their culture and Islam.

Thus he said, PAS should stop focusing on race and religion during the by-election, and get back to the real issue of ensuring good governance for the country's future.

The three-cornered fight between BN, PAS and Amanah will culminate on June 18.
