Leadership void over kafir harbi fiasco; Umno sackings rile

Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Outrage over kafir harbi label

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was criticised for failing to show leadership after the mufti of his home state declared those who opposed hudud including DAP as "kafir harbi" - non-believers who can be killed for opposing Islam.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said he wept for the nation over the "kafir harbi" declaration while the government chose to keep silent.

Meanwhile Amanah vice president Mujahid Yusof Rawa demanded that the Pahang mufti retract the controversial statement.

Even Perkasa, which had declared DAP as its sworn enemy, thought the Pahang mufti had gone overboard and urged him to correct his statement.

Up in arms over Umno sackings

Former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin was defiant after his sacking from the party, bidding Umno farewell and vowing to soldier on.

A group of anti-Najib Umno leaders lamented that the prime minister was emboldened after his twin by-election victories and mooted the possibility of a new '3M' party, led by Muhyiddin, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and sacked Umno supreme council member Mukhriz Mahathir.

However, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said the Umno rebels now need to look beyond ousting Najib and should commit themselves to the reformasi movement.

Johor Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin, who leads Umno in Muhyiddin's home state, said they accepted the sacking but Muhyiddin's own division of Pagoh was up in arms.

Cabinet reshuffle next week

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is speculated to announce his reshuffled cabinet next week.

Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi said he trusted the prime minister and believed the reshuffle will only be to fill vacancies amid claims that Najib may move to curb his deputy's influence by changing his portfolio.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister James Masing said the vacancy for the Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister should only be filled by a Sarawakian as it was previously held by a minister from the state.

Other Kini bites

Parti Amanah Negara vowed to work harder after its unsatisfactory showing in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections.

PKR's Rafizi Ramli urged young voters not to do a Brexit on Malaysia, explaining the lower turnout of young voters, like in the by-elections, led to Britain's exit from EU and the ensuing economic upheaval.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said since the prime minister jailed the Brexit referendum as something that should be respected as a democrat, Kuala Lumpur too should get a referendum on whether it should get to vote for its mayor.

Looking ahead

Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir are expected to make their first public appearance tomorrow afternoon to address their sackings from Umno.

Having purged his opponents from Umno, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will be on a blitz in his home constituency of Pekan.
