'Non-existent' corruption offence exposes BN's plot, says Guan Eng

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today accused BN of wanting to put him in jail for 20 years for a "non-existent" corruption offence.

He said the charge of re-zoning a plot of land in Balik Pulau from agriculture to housing was baseless, since the State Planning Committee he headed had not intervened in the matter.

"What then is the benefit or corruption to the landowner, Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd (MESB), when there is no benefit accrued as the land remained zoned as agricultural?" asked Lim in a statement.

He also noted that his charges were unrelated to the Taman Manggis land controversy that BN had been playing up for months in order to discredit him.

"Despite all the hype and even threats for a public debate that Abdul Rahman (Dahlan) then chickened out, nothing came out of the Taman Manggis land investigations proving the lies of BN," said Lim.

In March, Umno Tasek Gelugor MP Shahbudin Yahaya "exposed" Lim's purchase of a bungalow below market value.

Shahbudin tried to link it to the sale of government land in Taman Manggis for a hospital project they claimed was meant for the poor.

But Lim said it was the previous BN state government that had wanted to develop the Taman Manggis land commercially.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission arrested Lim on Wednesday, and he was charged in the High Court in Penang yesterday for approving the re-zoning of the plot of land in Balik Pulau.

He was also charged with purchasing the bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn below market value.
