Controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik today continued to defend himself against allegations that he inspired the terrorist attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh, last Saturday.

While admitting to "inspiring hundreds of thousands, millions," of people to become closer to Islam, he said not all of his "fans" followed everything he said.

"Once a person comes closer to Islam, there are possibilities they start hearing other speakers.

"And today, as we are aware of, there are some people who misguide the Muslims, and in the name of Islam they encourage them to kill innocent people, innocent human beings, which is totally against the Quran," Zakir said in a YouTube video today.

Zakir then denied ever condoning terrorism in his talks, and called media reports saying otherwise as "devilish".

Speaking from Mecca, with the Kaaba visible behind him, Zakir denied ever condoning terrorism in his talks, and added, "I condemn all acts of terrorism."

Last Saturday, gunmen attacked an upscale cafe in the Bangladeshi capital, killing 20 people inside, before police stormed the building and rescued 13 hostages.

It was reported that six of the gunmen were killed during the police operation and one had been captured.

Two of the gunmen were then reported to be social media followers of Zakir.

On Monday, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that two of those involved in the Dhaka attack had studied at the Monash University branch campus in Bandar Sunway, but he could not verify if the pair were attackers or victims.

Monash University has also said that it has yet to receive any confirmation if the former students were victims or assailants.

It added that the university would provide an update once the identities have been confirmed by the authorities.
