Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is expected to brief PKR leaders tonight on holding a snap election in the northern state.

PKR is scheduled to hold its political bureau meeting at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya, where the DAP leader is expected to make an appearance.

Contacted by Malaysiakini, a PKR leader, who declined to be named, confirmed that Lim would attend the meeting but refused to elaborate.

Quizzed on the matter at the sidelines of a court proceedings in Kuala Lumpur, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said: “Insya Allah (God willing), Lim will attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Star Online, which also reported on Lim attending the meeting, claimed that PKR leaders are not keen on having a snap polls.

"DAP needs to convince us on the necessity of having such a exercise. They need to show us the numbers," one unnamed PKR top official was quoted as saying.

The report also claimed that a six-member DAP delegation comprising top leaders had met with PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail last night regarding this matter.

According to the report, Wan Azizah was also non-committal about holding the polls and requested PKR leaders from Penang to attend the meeting to provide their feedback.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that the DAP central executive committee discussed the snap election during a meeting last night and is seeking the views of its allies on the matter.

The snap polls is seen as an attempt to re-establish Lim’s position in view of the corruption charges against him.

The DAP-led coalition has been in power in Penang since 2008 with Lim as its chief minister.

Following the 2013 state election, DAP has 19 state seats, PKR 10 and PAS one. BN has 10 seats.

Political analysts have concurred that if a snap polls is called, Lim and DAP could garner sympathy votes but questioned if this was the right thing to do.
