Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has revoked its parking charge increase for Taman Tun Dr Ismail, following a meeting between City Hall and Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor this morning, reported Star Online.

“After taking in the views of all parties, City Hall has decided to revert the parking charges at TTDI since it is a residential township," Kuala Lumpur mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz reportedly said.

According to the news portal's report, the revocation will take place with immediate effect.

In an immediate response, DAP Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said that the sudden U-turn by the federal government and DBKL clearly showed that the move to increase the parking charges which was supposed to reduce traffic congestion in the city, was arbitrary, and without proper consultation with traffic-flow specialists.

"How could the minister, mayor and their officers not know that TTDI is a housing area? Did they spend too much time on working trips overseas, that they forgot the makeup of their own capital city?" he asked.

He reiterated the call of his fellow Pakatan Harapan Kuala Lumpur MPs for a moratorium on the parking fee hike as it was not fair to punish all road users, and was not an effective way to reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

He called for authorities to conduct a detailed study on the matter and hold town hall meetings with residents before any more drastic decisions were made.

This followed public outcry over the 150 percent hike in parking charges in Bukit Bintang, Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas, Desa Hartamas, Solaris Mont Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar, imposed by City Hall since Monday.

The hourly parking charge in these areas was increased from 80sen an hour to RM2 for the first hour, and RM3 for the second and subsequent hours.

It was reported that motorists who parked their vehicles from 7.30am to 6pm, like those who work in the city for example, would have to pay up to RM32 a day.
