Don't be alarmed by presence of armed cops in public places

Johor police today advised the public including tourists to remain calm and not be alarmed by the presence of armed policemen conducting patrol in several public locations in the state.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the presence of personnel from the Serious Crime Investigation Department (D9) and the Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Department (D7) at shopping centres, was aimed at preventing crime and the people should feel more confident instead.

"Orders have been issued to all district police chiefs to step up patrols. We want the people and tourists especially from Singapore, to enjoy their weekends in the state safely and in comfort when shopping," he told reporters at a Hari Raya feast organised by the Johor police contingent headquarters, in Johor Baru today.

He said crime prevention patrols would be conducted daily at randomly selected public places before being stepped up further during weekends.

Wan Ahmad said the proactive measure by Johor police was in line with the rapid development in the state especially in Iskandar Malaysia, and the people should see the effort as a positive move to ensure security in the state.

Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad  said police would be proposing to the state government to study roads around Taman Century in the city to be turned into one-way streets as well as improve streetlights in the area.

He said the proposal was presented to Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin at the Johor Security Committee meeting last month.

"The streets in the housing area are busy as there are shopping centres and hotels, as well as old residential areas.

"There have been reports of snatch thefts in the area and we do not want such crimes to affect the presence of tourists at shopping malls and those staying inthe hotels nearby," he said.

According to Wan Ahmad Najmuddin, the Johor menteri besar had agreed to the proposal, which would be channeled to the Johor state secretary to enable the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) to conduct further studies.
