A man was killed while attempting to carry out a bomb attack outside a music festival in Ansbach, Germany, the Bavarian Interior Ministry said early this morning.

An additional 10 people were injured in the explosion, which occurred around 10pm (2000 GMT) last night.

The incident appeared to involve a “deliberately set explosion”, a ministry spokesperson told dpa.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann was to hold a joint press conference with police at 3am (0100 GMT).

The detonation occurred near the entrance to the Ansbach Open 2016 music festival, where approximately 2,500 people were in attendance, Ansbach Mayor Carda Seidel said.

Seidel dismissed suggestions the blast may have been a gas explosion. Some witnesses spoke of two explosions.

The open air concert came to an immediate halt and panic ensued in the city centre.

Paramedics were seen carrying stretchers, and the old city was entirely cordoned off. Rescue vehicles were assembled near the Ansbach castle and a helicopter with a searchlight circled the city.

Approximately 200 police officers were on hand, along with 350 other rescue personnel.

The bombing was the third bloody incident within a week in Bavaria. It followed Friday’s shooting rampage in Munich that left 10 dead, including the 18-year-old shooter. Last Monday, a 17-year-old attacked and severely wounded passengers on a train in Wuerzburg.
