Why isn't gov't grateful to US for efforts to save 1MDB funds?

YOURSAY | 'Surely it should be thankful it's working to return money from stolen property.'

1MDB and the US gov’t - what comes next?

FellowMalaysian: If businessman Jho Low tries to claim that the compounded properties were bought with his, or his family's wealth, then he is lying because his family does not own that amount of wealth.

Will Paris Hilton or Leonardo DiCaprio be ever seen in the company of Jho Low again?

Instead of being thankful and appreciative of the FBI and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) for their efforts in restituting the money invested in stolen properties back to the country and catching the thieves, the Malaysian government is pouring scorn over the US efforts and accusing it of conspiring with the opposition here in an attempt to overthrow Premier Najib Razak's regime. Indeed in Bolehland, cows do fly.

Falcon: It's ironic that the logo of the incumbent government is the scales of justice. There you have it, to decide what manner of response you want to initiate.

On one hand, the rights, interests and future of a nation with over 26 million people, and on the other, that of the criminals, co-conspirators, and others who failed in their duty of care, and by neglect and omission, their oath to serve and protect Malaysia.

This is treason. Thank you John Malott, the government and people of the United States of America for your support and investigation.

Vijay47: There is a lot of Hollywoody stuff in the 1MDB script and thus it is not particularly ironic that the continuing saga or the sordid tale should be along the lines of Joseph Heller's 'Catch 22'.

Riza Aziz and Jho Low cannot ask for their property back as there is no way in hell they could justify having the necessary funds to acquire those assets in the first place. Explanations of frugal savings since childhood and gifts from generous Arabs have already been used up by other crooks.

Najib himself cannot ask for the return of the moola since nobody in Malaysia has reported it to be missing. Only in Malaysia can we have such a strange whodunit - but we do have villains, tons of them. Oh, Miss Marple, wherefore art thou?

Anonymous Hotplate: Malaysia is a very small country compared to other countries in the world, and yet it is one of the most corrupted countries, with corrupt leaders misusing people's money. After this PM, the AG and IGP have gone, Malaysians should pray that we don't get these kinds of leaders anymore.

Citizenkane: What a load of bull this whole article is. It's misleading and mischievous. Makes one recall the Scorpene case, where they said the case would go to court.

Now, four years on since that was said, what has happened?

Anonymous #13114320: I just hope there will be criminal charges soon, to include Malaysian Official 1. The US should make known who he is to the rest of world. It should be put to the Malaysian inspector-general of police (IGP) and attorney-general (AG) that this is how a real investigation should be.

And thank you Malott, for your continuous efforts for this country.

Anonymous #40538199: Maybe the US seizure of assets is the first step of God's answer to the special prayer held by MACC during its darkest hour, in the cause of investigating and nailing the culprits.

I hope PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang can lead a special prayer with MACC for speedy divine retribution upon the culprits and for the safety of the officers involved.

Tony Soprano: I've known Malaysians for decades and until recently, most Malaysians had only contempt for the United States due to a legacy of still pertinent Mahathirism. Average people still scoffed at "capitalism" when referring to the US - as if Malaysian (crony) capitalism did not exist.

The US, just like any country is hardly perfect, but at least many Malaysians now take a more balanced view. Of course, it is certainly in American interests to prosecute this matter to the extent of both civil and criminal law.

The US financial system cannot be seen as a multi-billion-dollar safe haven for international fraud. Should such practices be allowed unabated, the US and its currency would become the laughing stock of the world and it would be considered simply a large banana republic.

The dollar would become a has-been currency, about as useful as the Nigerian naira.

Anonymous_1375498634: In this particular case, how nice and humane the Americans are, coming to the forefront to protect the interest of the rakyat against the government, which has been drumming rakyat didahulukan but in actuality doing the reverse, as proven by the civil suits filed by US Department of Justice.

Whatever some people say against the Americans, their actions have proven otherwise. They came to protect South Korea against the aggression of communist North Korea and today South Korea, which was behind Malaysia 20 years ago, has overtaken Japan in digital and automotive technology.

Bosnia today is a sovereign nation, thanks to the United Nations force spearheaded by the US which crushed the post-Tito communists. Whatever it is, America has been and will always be the world's policeman.

Esther: I'm so ashamed to be a Malaysian. Dignity and pride as a Malaysian are all gone now, because of one man.

Anonymous 346311443715783: Thank you US, thank you Malott, thank you Sarawak Report and many thank yous to many others for being guardians over Malaysia. No thanks to those supposed caretakers of Malaysia.

SuppTulang: We totally agree with you, Malott; you're absolutely right. Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) or MO1 (to use it the way Najib is fond of doing) is now an international 'pariah' no matter how much the Red Shirts will deny.

Negarawan: "How ironic it is, that is the US government - the FBI and the US attorney general – are doing the job that the IGP and Malaysian AG should be doing."

Once again Malott, thank you for your detailed explanation and putting things into clear perspective. All fair-minded Malaysians are highly indebted to the people of the US for upholding justice and the rule of law in the 1MDB mega scandal, on our behalf.

There can be no greater act of friendship than this. As I mentioned before, the perpetrators behind 1MDB can only be brought to justice outside of Malaysia, owing to the fact that all the key local institutions have succumbed to corruption and become subservient to the main perpetrator.

Malaysians are also not predisposed to taking the law into their own hands. Whether the US comes under the Clinton or Trump administration, we hope that the US will continue to pursue 1MDB with the full power of the law. Your articles should be translated into all major languages and disseminated.

Cogito Ergo Sum: Among all the excesses and theft, the worse is when our money was used to pay gambling debts. As someone said, parents struggle to send children to school and skip meals so that the next generation would have a better chance.

But, it will take generations to repair and return the monies stolen. What have you done to us? The money cannot be returned as long as BN is in power. You cannot return the money to the very thieves who stole it in the first place. Thanks, Mallot for enlightening us.

Touche: I propose that Malott be granted honorary citizenship of Malaysia. He deserves to be a citizen of Malaysia more than the traitors who should be jailed for life.

Desperate for Change: Thank you Malott, for this detailed article. It allows Malaysians to understand what the US can do. But I am afraid, just like Lee Kuan Yew had said - many Malaysians are compliant and complacent.
