DAP Youth leader adds spice to 'naked' spat over snap polls

A DAP Youth leader has added a dollop of spice to the Facebook tit-for-tat between Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua and PKR central committee member.

"Siapa makan cili, dialah yang rasa pedas," Chiong Yoke Kong cited the Malay adage, which literally meant that "a person who consumed chillies would feel the heat".

Figuratively, the adage suggested that those in the wrong would feel the guilt.

The DAP Youth education bureau chief denied Latheefa’s claim that DAP made a unilateral announcement on the holding of snap polls in Penang.

"There were some quarters who were concerned about facing the snap election and they were the ones who leaked it to the media," he said in a media statement.

Chiong also dismissed Latheefa's remarks about DAP unilaterally announcing the demise of Pakatan Rakyat and subsequently the birth of Pakatan Harapan.

He pointed out that PAS was the one which severed political ties with DAP during its 2015 muktamar (annual general assembly).

Prior to this, DAP had announced it was cutting ties with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

"DAP was forced to state that Pakatan Rakyat no longer existed and this is not the same with dissolving Pakatan Rakyat unilaterally," said Chiong.

"As for Pakatan Harapan, news of its formation could not be announced without the participation of PKR.

"The launch of Pakatan Harapan in Shah Alam on Jan 9 this years was officiated by PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

"Doesn't Latheefa understand this simple logic?" he asked.

He also criticised the PKR legal bureau chief for claiming that DAP's reasons for holding the snap polls kept changing.

"Compared to PKR which consistently made changes during the Selangor menteri besar issue, DAP has always been committed to compiling all the current issues for the snap polls.

"There is no conflict when DAP raises the issue of a referendum for (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) similar to how PKR attempted to secure the people’s mandate for Permatang Pauh to manifest people’s support for the PKR president," he added.

Chiong pointed out that DAP always supported PKR in its numerous political stratagems, unlike another one of its “close friends which is fond of backstabbing”.

"Once again, DAP Youth advises Latheefa to correct the facts and not make baseless attacks..." he added.

Yesterday, Latheefa had responded to Pua, who expressed his disappointment with "friends who leave you naked", which observers linked to PKR’s stand on the snap polls.

In her Facebook post, the PKR leader said: "Don’t strip, and complain about being naked."

On Tuesday, Wan Azizah reiterated that PKR remained unconvinced on holding a snap election.

Meanwhile, Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang also did not let the opportunity slip away by taking a swipe at DAP.

"DAP quarrels with PAS. Now, DAP quarrels with PKR. Can you see the common link?" he tweeted, adding the hashtag "#kakigaduh".
