Probe Umno Youth vice-chief for making false report, cops urged

The police should investigate Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun for lodging a police report on a plot to topple the prime minister, said PAS Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar.

Mahfuz said it was puzzling that police were not taking any action, and argued that the report was fake, rooted with bad intentions, and had created public hatred and enmity towards current and former civil servants.

This is with inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar having said yesterday that while the report was based on assumptions, no action will be taken against Khairul Azwan as it did not constitute a false report.

"Is the inspector-general of police closing the case because he is worried that it will reveal the investigation papers and charge papers from the three Tan Sris and their teams?" Mahfuz asked in a statement today.

Mahfuz was referring to former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, and former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamad.

Zeti, Gani and Abu Kassim had been part of the now-dissolved special task force investigating 1MDB.

Khairul Azwan's police report last week named the three as being part of a conspiracy to overthrow Najib Abdul Razak and his government.

Mahfuz argued today that Khairul Azwan should be investigated and charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of six months, or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both.

"The police shouldn't take action on ordinary citizens for lodging false police reports, yet be too afraid to take action on Khairul Azwan, an Umno errand boy," said Mahfuz.

"The nasty, fake police report that came with Umno's blessings have humiliated, tarnished and destroyed the reputation of the three Tan Sris and the civil service.

"This insolent and rude Khairul Azwan must be investigated and charged."

However, Najib, who is also Umno president, and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin last week said Khairul Azwan had acted in his individual capacity when lodging the police report.

Khairul Azwan, who hails from Perak Umno, is expected to hold a press conference on the matter later this afternoon.

'What about Malaysian Official 1?'

Meanwhile, former PAS member Zulhazmi Shariff said if the police do not take action against Khairul Azwan, the chances that 'Malaysian Official 1' would be brought to justice are even slimmer.

Zulhazmi, who is now with DAP, was referring to the unnamed individual mentioned in the United States Department of Justice court documents to sieze 1MDB-linked assets.

He asked why the police were giving Khairul Azwan "special treatment" despite the very serious allegations he made.

“Why is he so special? Is it because he is the vice-chief of Umno Youth or are there some other issues that are to be protected?” he asked in a statement.

He added that if Khairul Azwan was not charged with any offence, it only proved that authorities are protecting Umno leaders.

“If an Umno Youth leader like Khairul Azwan is let off free and protected, what else then for Malaysian Official 1?” Zulhazmi asked.

He said Khairul Azwan should be investigated for an offence under Chapter VI of the Penal Code (for false report) and the allegations he made on security should bring investigations under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

“These are serious allegations and should not considered light or playful, where someone is let off free because he ‘assumed’," said Zulhazmi, who is also a lawyer.

“Besides Section 182 of the Penal Code for giving false information, Khairul Azwan can also be investigated under Section 499 of the Penal Code for defamation."
