Feuding politicians find something in common - the shuttlecock

Malaysian politicians from both sides of the divide, who have been smashing each other, appear to have found one thing in common - a shuttlecock - for the next 36 hours at least.

This is after Malaysian shuttlers qualified for the semi-final and final in the men's doubles and mixed doubles events, respectively, in the Olympics going on in Rio de Janeiro.

Prior to this, the nation's hope of securing its first Olympics gold medal rested solely on the shoulders of Lee Chong Wei, who has qualified for the quarter-final.

But now, there is a possibility of securing three gold medals.

The men's doubles pair of Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong defeated the world's top-ranked Korean pair Lee Yong Dae/Yoon Yeon Seong to set up a semi-final showdown with China’s Chai Biao-Hong Wei at 8.30pm (Malaysian time) today.

Whereas mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Yiu Ling will take on Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir in the final match at 11.30pm Malaysian time tomorrow.

On Twitter, both ruling and opposition politicians showered accolades on the national badminton team for the impressive performance.
