Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Kuala Lumpur mayor Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz should lead by example and declare their assets now, said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

This is amid plans to reform asset declaration procedures in the ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) after a recent graft scandal.

"As a sign of commitment to the principles of transparency and good governance in the ministry and DBKL, I urge Tengku Adnan and Amin Nordin, to be an example to their officers by also publicly declaring their assets immediately,” said Fahmi in a statement.

While PKR welcomed Tengku Adnan's statement that each department in his ministry must re-scrutinise officers' asset declaration forms to curb graft, Fahmi said it was too little too late.

He pointed out that a 'Datuk' and a “Datuk Seri' were among four arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on allegations of possessing millions in assets and cash.

He said safeguards against corruption should be done periodically, instead of as a knee-jerk response.

He noted that governance watchdogs had already raised the need to overhaul asset declaration systems for ministers and civil servants.

On Aug 15, the MACC arrested a high-ranking DBKL official with the title 'Datuk Seri' for alleged corruption, in a nationwide operation that saw two other 'Datuk'-titled goverment officers picked up and millions in assets seized.

Amin Nordin has expressed his shock at the news, while Tengku Adnan noted that the DBKL official arrested was a "good officer".

The federal territories minister later announced that a re-evaluation of asset declaration procedures will be done for all departments in his ministry.

Meanwhile, DAP Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng blames Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low for the failure to enforce existing asset declaration regulations in all government departments to keep tabs on officers who live way beyond their means.

The announcement by Tengku Adnan for all departments in his ministry to look into asset declaration meant that Low (who is in charge of integrity), has failed in his duty, Lim said in a statement today.

He added that other than officers who were still serving, all retired and transferred DBKL officials and ministers from the relevant ministry must be asked to declare their assets as well.

This was to address questions that might arise if they were to purchase assets after their transfer or retirement, he said.

Lim also called for investigation into the award of the 'Datuk' and 'Datuk Seri' title for the DBKL senior official who was arrested for alleged graft.

He urged the MACC to ask who it was that recommended the official for the award and for what reason.
