Sculptures based on famed Lat cartoons unveiled today in downtown Kuala Lumpur will not share the same fate as Puncak Purnama, the government assured.

Puncak Purnama was a sculpture by Anugerah Seniman Negara recipient Syed Ahmad Syed Jamal which was demolished in July.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor, who had labelled Puncak Purnama an "eyesore" last month, said the Lat sculptures in Jalan Melaka, Jalan Gereja and Jalan Raja Chulan would be cared for.

"We will take care of the sculptures. They will be under DBKL's care," he said.

Tengku Adnan had earlier said Syed Ahmad's sculpture was beyond repair and had to be demolished.

The notice at the demolition site states the sculpture was demolished to allow DBKL to do landscaping work. The City Hall was instructed to pay damages.

Puncak Purnama, commissioned by United Malayan Banking Corp Bhd (UMBC), was built using ceramic glass in 1986.

The Lat sculptures are among the new elements of urban design introduced by DBKL.

The sculptures are also to acknowledge Lat's work in chronicling the multiracial and united face of Malaysia.

On a separate matter, Tengku Adnan said Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malayisa (Bersatu) pro tem Wanita chief Anina Saadudin likely withdrew her lawsuits against him and Umno president Najib Abdul Razak because she does not expect to win.

"It's up to her since she's the one who sued us," he said.

Anina yesterday withdrew her lawsuits because she is now fighting through a new platform.

The former Langkawi Wanita Umno leader had earlier mounted a legal challenge against her expulsion from Umno.

She also filed legal action to compel Najib to return RM2.6 billion that he said was political donation for the party, to Umno.
