Opposition's PM candidate in question; Tian Chua convicted

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Still no clear PM candidate for opposition

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said it is premature to name the opposition's candidate for prime minister when the opposition's support itself remains uncertain.

This was after former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad proposed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister if other opposition parties were in agreement.

Pakatan Harapan secretariat chief Saifuddin Abdullah said the coalition’s choice for prime minister is Anwar Ibrahim but conceded that an interim prime minister may be needed as Anwar is currently in jail.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said he hoped the opposition can form a new alliance by the end of this year.

Red shirts target Bersih

Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, who leads the Himpunan Baju Merah movement, made a bizarre claim that Bersih has been infiltrated by the Islamic State and plans to take over the country's airport and administrative capital during its Nov 19 rally.

Bersih denies this and is mulling legal action over the claim.

Meanwhile, another splinter of the anti-Bersih red shirts movement, known as Gerakan Merah, led by Mohd Ali Baharom @ Ali Tinju, has challenged Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah to attend his forum or be confronted.

Tian Chua convicted

PKR's Batu MP Tian Chua was found guilty under the Sedition Act 1948.

He was jailed three months and fined RM1,800, but Tian Chua obtained a stay pending an appeal.

Several human rights groups, including the International Commission of Jurists, condemned the decision, accusing the government of stiffling dissent.

Other Kinibites

An international investigation led by Netherlands concluded that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down with a Russian missile over Eastern Ukraine.

A fourth Malaysian has died due to defective Takata airbags, this time involving the driver of a 2009 Honda City, for which the airbag was not changed, despite a recall.

DRB-Hicom is reportedly looking to sell off a 51 percent stake in Proton.

A Malaysian trawler owner was kidnapped off the coast of Semporna while another crew of 19 were robbed off the coast of Lahad Datu.

Looking ahead

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is expected to attend a ground-breaking ceremony in Sentul.
