Pakatan Harapan is urging Election Commission chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah to resign and to postpone the redelineation exercise until an independent commission is formed.

This was after Kuala Lumpur Pakatan Harapan MPs submitted letters of protest to the Wilayah EC today.

Led by DAP acting president and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, they each submitted letters of protest with voters' signatures to the EC officer.

They included DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, PKR Batu MP Chua Tian Chang, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Wangsa Maju MP Tan Kee Kwong.

DAP Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw was absent but a delegate was present, whereas Party Amanah Negara Kuala Krai MP Hatta Ramli, who was the party's Wilayah chairperson, was present despite the party having no seats in the area.

They also held a banner stating "Object Wilayah EC's redelineation proposal" and placards such as "EC should be independent", "Do not be Umno's agent".

A total of 11 parliamentary seats are in Kuala Lumpur. Titiwangsa and Setiawangsa are under Umno while Bandar Tun Razak is under Khalid Ibrahim, a former PKR member.

Tan Kok Wai claimed the redelineation process had violated the "One person, one vote" concept and contradicted the Federal Constitution.

Hence, he said Mohd Hashim should step down to save EC’s already tarnished image.

"People's doubts towards the EC has reached its peak. The EC will be monitoring the coming general election. How can a chief without integrity lead EC for this? This is a serious issue," he said.

Nurul Izzah echoed this, saying the opposition's voices may not be heard even though they have tried all avenues to protest against the proposed redelineation.

"Not only they have to resign, the redelineation should be postponed until an independent EC which is not subject to Umno emerges."

Hatta also said the EC had lost a good opportunity to rebuild its reputation.

"The EC is seen as a lopsided institution with regards to voters registration, elections or redelineation. It has a chance to restore its image in this redelineation but it has missed it.

"I agree with what Tan proposed - the EC chief should resign."

'No meddling from BN'

Meanwhile, BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor said he had sent letters to BN component parties advising them to object to the proposal through proper channels.

This includes through a local council representative, elected representative or by gathering 100 voters who also object to the redelineation from the relevant constituency, to submit an objection to the EC.

"What is important is that we do not interfere with the EC, as claimed by the opposition.

"They say the proposal is purportedly to pave the way for the ruling party's victory, that BN is interfering.

"Clearly we are not since we too are dissatisfied with the proposal for many areas," he told reporters in Putrajaya.

This includes the BN-held constituencies of Wangsa Maju, Setiawangsa and the DAP-held constituency of Kepong, he said.
