Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) leader Husam Musa, who is regarded as a protege of Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, said the late PAS spiritual leader wanted the Islamist party to participate in Bersih rallies.

"Forgive me, I just wish to repeat what he said on Bersih matters...

"Nik Aziz said it is compulsory to attend Bersih (rallies) when he was alive. There are people who claim to be closer to Nik Aziz compared to me who have forgotten (this message)," he said at the Selangor Amanah anniversary celebration last night.

Husam however said he still remembered Nik Aziz's advice and hoped that the PAS leadership would embrace the late leader's struggle.

"I still remember, and you too remember as well, he asked us to bring water along in order to perform prayers wherever the azan is heard...

"Show our Chinese and Indian friends the discipline of a Muslim. I think...alhamdulillah that Amanah 'inherited’ Nik Aziz's spirit for the struggle," he added.

On Oct 2, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the opposition party would not participate in the Bersih 5 rally scheduled for Nov 19.

However, he said PAS has yet to decide if it would allow party members to join the rally in their personal capacity.

Takiyuddin said in principle, PAS supported Bersih's original demands but noted that the movement now also had other objectives which the party felt was not in line with PAS' approach.

"We have our own methods to be an effective opposition in the country under the current PAS, in line with a matured and harmonious political culture,” he added.
