Jamal arrested; Nazri tells Dr M to zip it; 10th anniversary of Altantuya’s murder

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Red-shirts leader Jamal arrested

Red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos has been remanded for two days, with the order coming into effect at 8.30am yesterday following his arrest at the KL International Airport (KLIA) on his return from Dubai.

Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah apologised on behalf of Jamal over an incident that saw journalists being roughed up by the anti-Bersih group in Kuala Selangor last Saturday.

However, Armand also urged the police to be fair and arrest Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and her predecessor Ambiga Sreenevasan for acts of provocation and organising a nationwide convoy without permits.

Nazri tells Dr M to zip it

Dr Mahathir Mohamad should keep quiet instead of “confirming he is stupid”, said Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, suggesting that the former prime minister had gone senile and was throwing tantrums.

This was after Mahathir lambasted Budget 2017, the eighth national fiscal plan under Najib Abdul Razak, as meaningless as the government coffers are faced with a serious financial drought.

Meanwhile, the prices of several categories of cooking oil are set to increase next month, Oriental Daily reported the Malayan Edible Oil Manufacturers’ Association as saying, stating that it is caused by the impending removal of cooking oil subsidies.

In another development, Second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani brushed off speculation that the government would increase the goods and services tax (GST) by two percent.

More Kinibites

Dr Shaariibuu Setev suspects Mongolia, Malaysia and Australia have colluded to mute the politically sensitive case of a former Malaysian policeman who murdered his daughter exactly 10 years ago and has since been held in detention in Sydney.

Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio’s charitable foundation will return gifts or donations made to him or his ventures if they are found to have come from Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, which is being investigated for money laundering, said his representatives.

A group calling itself ‘Concerned Citizens’ has offered an RM10,000 reward for information on those who issued an Islamic State-styled death threat to Bersih leaders.

Although Umno and PAS rarely see eye-to-eye, leaders from both parties agree that Muslims would not be confused by the word ‘hot dog’, commenting on news that pretzel franchise Auntie Anne’s was asked to change the name of its ‘Pretzel Dog’ to ‘Pretzel Sausages’.

Looking ahead

Prime Minister Najib will deliver a special address this afternoon on Budget 2017, which will be tabled in Parliament tomorrow.

To mark the 10th anniversary of Altantuya’s murder, Malaysiakini is publishing an exclusive interview with her grieving father, Setev.
