A PKR lawmaker incurred the wrath of Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein when he linked the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder to the threat posed by the Islamic State.

Lee Boon Chye (PKR-Gopeng) had asked the minister how the government planned to tighten security of the armed forces' weapons in light of the IS threat.

He said the security of weapons was compromised when Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak oversaw the defence portfolio.

"There was the Al-Maunah incident in Sauk, Perak, the incident where fighter jet engines were stolen, and when C4 explosives were used to kill Altantuya," he told the Dewan Rakyat.

In response, Hishammuddin censured the opposition MP for politicising the matter.

"When you link it to Altantuya and other issues, it's clear that (the question) is political. I ask that we take IS seriously… Don't draw links to other issues when dealing with IS.

"This can threaten your own constituency if it is politicised and made into a polemic," he added.

During the Altantuya murder case, the prosecution told the Federal Court that the police special operations force did not use C4 explosives.

Two former special operations force personnel were convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. But one of them, Sirul Azhar Umar, fled to Australia before the apex court overturned his acquittal.

The case took a political twist when a close associate of Najib, defence analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, was accused of abetting the murder. The latter was later acquitted.

Najib has denied any involvement in the matter, or that he knew the victim.

Meanwhile on a related matter, Hishammuddin agreed with Lee that IS 'lone wolves' was a serious matter that should be tackled.

However, he said even more advanced countries like France were having trouble with individual actors.

He said the most important factor in dealing with this was the people themselves, who could act as the eyes and ears on the ground to shore up any gaps in official intelligence.

Thus he hoped, members of parliament could stand united and be good leaders and set a good example so that the IS threat is taken seriously.
