Najib's colourful salvos; MO1 ‘stunt’ in Parliament; inside Budget 2017

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Najib's Budget salvos

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak delivered a colourful Budget 2017 speech, taking a veiled swipe at mentor-turned-nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad on a number of occasions.

Najib also unveiled Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) in a not-so-subtle bid to replace Mahathir's Vision 2020.

He also defended BR1M which came under severe attack by Mahathir, stressing that it was not "animal feed" and instead announced an increase to the cash handout.

During the 140-minute Budget speech, Najib urged Malaysians to tighten their belts and encouraged the poor to become ride-sharing drivers.

Pakatan stages walkout

As Najib was delivering his speech in Parliament, opposition MPs held up ‘Siapa MO1?’ (Who is MO1?) placards and later staged a walkout.

MO1, short for Malaysian Official 1, is referred to in the US Department of Justice's case against 1MDB. It stated that US$731 billion of 1MDB funds entered MO1's personal bank accounts.

Najib described the “stunt” as an "embarrassment" for the opposition, and both BN and PAS condemned the walkout.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan pointed out that he had already explained who MO1 was in a BBC interview, where he declared it was Najib.

Malaysiakini also took a closer look at the Budget 2017 figures and compared them to the last seven Budgets tabled by Najib since he took over as prime minister from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

This is the second time Najib tabled a contracting budget which has fallen to below 2014 levels.

Notably, Najib for the first time made sizeable cuts to the Prime Minister's Department after years of criticism that its budget was running out of control.

However, the cost of to maintain the “bloated” civil service continued to balloon and takes up more than a quarter of the entire budget.
