Bersih has submitted a notice to the police for its Nov 19 rally, three days after the red-shirts group submitted its own notice for a separate gathering on the same date.

"We have submitted a notice to Bukit Aman, Dang Wangi district police headquarters and Brickfields district police headquarters today," said Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

Bersih told the police that they will be gathering near Dataran Merdeka, she said.

According to her, Bersih had yet to finalise its gathering point on the mass rally.

Red-shirts group leader Jamal Md Yunus had earlier told Malaysiakini that they submitted the notice for their rallies on Nov 5 and Nov 19 together to police.

"Good, he is following the law but I hope there will be no violence or gangster behaviour," responded Maria.

Maria shrugged off concerns that the police would only allow the red-shirts gathering, as the latter had submitted its notice first.

"We won't change the time, date and venue. We will see what the police (have to) say," she told Malaysiakini.

Bersih's decision with regard to the time and venue of the rally is final, she said.

Jamal had claimed that 300,000 people had pledged to join the red-shirts rally on Nov 19.

"We will not hesitate to do anything to stop the Bersih rally. For me, our struggle will continue even if we are bathed in blood," the Sungai Besar Umno chief had said.

"Jamal can assemble, but our stand is still 'don't bring violence'. He has the intention and I will be shocked if the police allow them to assemble with threat," replied Maria.

Maria said she will discuss with her lawyers to decide whether to lodge a police report on Jamal's latest threat.

"In fact, we have a number of court cases against him with regard to the slander he made on IS (Islamic State)."

According to Maria, Jamal had been avoiding her lawyers who had until now failed to serve him the legal notice.

"We have sent the letter to (his) condominium, where the lawyer was not allowed to enter; we have sent to the Umno building where nobody wanted to accept; we sent to his house and nobody wanted to accept the letter.

"The last resort would be for us to advertise the letter in the newspaper and if he still doesn't come out and take it, we will bring it to court. Let the court make a decision to summon him," she said.

Maria called for every citizen to participate and express their views on clean and fair elections.

"I know people are saying there is no point doing so, but if we give up our right, nothing is going to change," she said.
