The Penang government is mulling legal action against the Election Commission (EC) for rejecting its objections against the latest redelineation exercise of the EC.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the EC's failure to draw new boundaries for constituencies in Penang has resulted in the Paya Terubong state seat with about 41,707 voters, compared with 12,752 voters in his Air Putih seat.

Lim has yet to receive an official notice from the EC on the rejection of the state's objections, which were filed with the EC last month.

While filing the objections on Oct 14, Lim had complained that the difference between the two seats is 3.27 times; that Paya Terubong alone can make up more than three seats.

"Why are there anomalies like this?" Lim asked at a press conference today after announcing the 5th Penang International Science Fair, which is planned for Nov 12 and 13 at the Spice Arena.

'EC has failed to do its duty'

He said Penang rejected the redelineation exercise of the EC as it did comply with the Federal Constitution.

"The EC has failed to do duty its duty. The EC is supposed to redraw the boundaries when there are such anomalies but it did not do so, and that is why we protested," Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, explained.

"But the EC rejected our objections, saying that it has not done any redelineation exercise in Penang.

"This is precisely why we are objecting to the EC's latest redelineation exercise," the Bagan MP added.

Lim said he would discuss with his lawyers on when to initiate court action against the EC so that Penang can claim its right for a hearing on the commission's redelineation exercise.

The opposition, especially the Pakatan Harapan parties, have condemned the EC's exercise as an attempt to keep BN in power, but the comnission has strongly denied these claims.

The Selangor government on Oct 19 filed a judicial review application in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur to stop the present redelineation exercise.

It wants the court to declare as null and void the Election Commission's Sept 15 redelineation notice, its recommendations, the electoral rolls used in the redelineation exercise and the draft constituency plan for Selangor.
