The Election Commission has granted the Penang state government a public hearing on the objections it has filed against the commission's electoral constituency redelineation exercise.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has received an official letter from EC, informing him to attend a hearing at Eastin Hotel on Nov 18.

Lim said five DAP assemblypersons and three parliamentarians submitted objections, each supported by 100 constituents, to the EC on Oct 14.

"However, the objections filed by all the eight representatives have been rejected by EC. Even their 100 supporters have no chance to attend a public hearing on the objections," Lim told a press conference today.

"This means they cannot attend any public hearing organised by the EC to hear the objections.

"We do not understand why the objections filed by the eight were rejected, but we will talk to our lawyers and will consider summoning the EC to court," added Lim, who is DAP secretary-general.

State executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo will accompany Lim to the Nov 18 hearing.

Jagdeep said the hearing is only for the objections submitted by the Penang government and not by party representatives.

"We will attend the hearing first, before we take any further action on behalf of the DAP," added the Dato Keramat assemblyperson.

Lim's objection to the EC questioned why the commission failed to carry out redelineation for two state constituencies in Penang - Paya Terubong and Air Putih.

Lim in his objection letter said the EC has not complied with redelineation requirements stated in the Federal Constitution.

"The EC did not do its job as required of it to according to the Federal Constitution.

"The EC has failed to redelineate Paya Terubong, which has 41,707 voters and Air Putih, which has only 12,752 voters," added Lim, who is the Air Putih assemblyperson.

According to him, it is not fair for Paya Terubong to have 3.27 times more voters than Air Putih.
