Police in Klang stopped a Bersih convoy from entering the Bandar Baru Klang area and confiscated its flyers yesterday, according to a convoy participant Lee Fu Haw.

“They blocked us and forced us to go directly to the Federal Highway and come to Section 7 (Shah Alam). They blocked all the junctions and roundabouts.

“And they didn’t allow us to distribute the flyers… In Little India, they took our flyers away and would not allow us to distribute them,” said Lee, who represented Klang in the Klang-Shah Alam leg of the convoy.

The convoy had departed from the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium about 4pm yesterday, at a flag-off event at which several police personnel kept watch.

The group of about 50 Bersih supporters stopped for a tea break before arriving at Klang’s ‘Little India’ area about 5pm, to distribute flyers.

However, Lee said, the police prevented the convoy participants from doing so, and the group proceeded towards the Bandar Baru Klang, only to find that the roads to the place were blocked.

The convoy then proceeded to its next destination, Section 7 in Shah Alam, for a prayer break, before heading to Section 18 for the torch handover ceremony.

The police kept watch on the convoy throughout its journey, with the lightbars on its patrol cars flashing after sunset.

As dusk came, the convoy had swelled to some 100 participants.

Lee, who is also a Klang municipal councillor, spoke on the police cooperation that the convoy had received during his speech at the torch handover ceremony.

Cooperation and disruption from police

“The past four hours have not been easy, because we have cooperation from the police, as well as disruptions from the police because they don’t want us to distribute these flyers.

“They said there is a problem with these flyers, but there is none. It is all ‘clean’ (Bersih). It is just excuses so that they can carry out orders ‘from above’,” Lee said.

The Bersih 5 convoys that have been conducted since last month are to promote the Bersih 5 rally, which is to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu on Nov 19.

The flyers, printed in English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil, highlight Bersih’s five demands.

The flyer also asks the people if they have enough income to make ends meet and whether it is appropriate for the prime minister to have RM2.6 billion in his bank account.

It urges readers to attend the Bersih 5 rally to make their voices heard.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had insisted that he never took public money for personal gain, and attorney-general Mohd Apandi Ali had cleared him of wrongdoing.
