Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that Parti Pribumi Bersatu (Bersatu) will indeed join Pakatan Harapan officially.

He also denied that Bersatu pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin was against the unification of Harapan and Bersatu.

"This is the decision of Bersatu. It is not true that the one who is against unity between Bersatu and Harapan is Muhyiddin.

"He is with me, (we) agree that we will join Harapan officially because we agree with Harapan's stance that the country must be freed from the leadership of (prime minister) Najib (Abdul Razak)," said Mahathir in his special lecture at the inaugural Pakatan Harapan Convention in Shah Alam.

Mahathir, who thanked the organisers many times during his speech for inviting him to speak today, also vowed that he would solve the uncertainties surrounding the signing of the agreement between Bersatu and Harapan.

“Believe me, we will join Pakatan Harapan,” he promised, ending in his speech.

Dr M: I support reformasi

Mahathir, earlier in his speech, said what was most important in their fight now was to defeat Najib.

Although there may be differences among the parties in Harapan, Mahathir said the differences were only minor.

“I have no problem to support reformasi (movement),” he added, to cheers and cries of "reformasi" from the crowd.

Mahathir, however, explained that his support for reformasi wass because among the reforms that needed to be made was with regard to elections.

“Elections under Najib is worse than elections in other countries,” he said.

Mahathir in 1998 sacked his then deputy Anwar Ibrahim before the latter was charged and subsequently jailed for sodomy.

The reformasi movement was born as a result of this.
