A Bersih convoy heading to Hulu Langat to promote the Bersih 5 rally was forced to turn back this morning, after being supposedly assaulted by a group of ‘Red Shirts’.

The 10am incident supposedly left two of the convoy participants injured.

According to Bersih’s official Facebook account, the two assaulted were the convoy’s chief coordinator, and a security personnel.

“A police report will follow. We urge the police to take firm and immediate action,” it said today, while sharing a purported video of the incident.

The video showed a group dressed in red shirts kicking a yellow shirt-clad motorcyclist.

A man wearing a white skull cap, a red shirt and a red scarf covering his face threatened to break the window of a vehicle, in which the person taking the video was seated.

When contacted, eyewitness and Bersih resource person Hishamuddin Rais said the convoy was supposed to go leafleting in the villages of Dusun Dua, Hulu Langat.

However, he said convoy of 19 cars was stopped by the red shirts, who were blocking the only road into the area.

One person was punched in the eye, and another had been kicked, he said, after which the convoy turned back and started to head towards Kajang instead.

“There were more than 50 (Red Shirts). If we didn’t withdraw, they would probably screw us up,” Hishamuddin said.

After failing to distribute Bersih 5 leaflets in Hulu Langat, he said the convoy had gone leafleting in Kajang instead, and had later performed a flash mob in Semenyih.

He said the group is now sheltering from a heavy downpour before continuing its activities.

The convoy is a part of a series of convoys since last month to promote the upcoming Bersih 5 rally, which is to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching on Nov 19.

Among others, it calls for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to resign over the 1MDB scandal.

Red-shirts leader punched

Sungai Besar Umno division chief and red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos had vehemently opposed Bersih, claiming that Bersih is trying to topple a legitimately elected government.

The confrontation between yellow shirt-clad Bersih activists and Jamal’s red-shirts had resulted in a number of violent clashes.

In the latest incident today, Jamal was allegedly punched in the face during a scuffle in Ampang today while pursuing a group of PKR activists distributing Bersih leaflets.

He shouted, ‘The police punched me!’ during the scuffle, but later told reporters he was punched by Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin’s followers.

Three red-shirts were arrested over the incident.

In another incident on Oct 8, Bersih 5 supporter Kusaini Kassim was egged and kicked by red-shirts in Sabak Bernam until rescued by a traffic police personnel.
