There is nothing wrong with a statement by the granddaughter of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tunku Munawirah Putra, labelling red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos as "uncouth" for using an image of the first prime minister as part of their anti-Bersih campaign.

Umno Youth exco Armand Azha Abu Hanifah, who is one of the group's leaders, said that she has the freedom to speak and it is part of the country's democratic process.

"No problem, we regard the statement by Tunku Abdul Rahman's granddaughter as freedom of speech," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

At the same time, Armand (photo) also pointed out that Tunku Munawirah should similarly regard Jamal's action as a part of his freedom of expression.

"She also have to accept Datuk Seri Jamal's rights (to speak) as a Malaysian citizen, and Tunku Abdul Rahman was one of Umno's top leaders once upon a time, (a fact) which cannot be erased from history.

"So I personally feel that the remarks on Twitter by the granddaughter of Tunku Abdul Rahman is part of the country's democratic process," he said.

Tunku Munawirah had yesterday through her Twitter handle condemned Jamal, who is Umno Sungai Besar division chief, for using her grandfather's image on the group's T-shirts.

In expressing her unhappiness towards Jamal's actions of using Tunku Abdul Rahman's image, she also described him as "loqlaq" - a Northern Malay colloquial term that means uncouth.

"Oi Jamal hang nak buat apa dengan gambaq Tok aku tu. Haishh! Loqlaq," she tweeted with the hashtag BERSIH5.

She also tweeted a photo of Jamal holding the red T-shirt with Tunku Abdul Rahman's iconic image with his fist raised in the air, as he announced the country's independence at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 31, 1957.

Jamal was released from the Ampang Jaya District police station earlier this afternoon after serving a four-day remand notice over alleged rioting.
