Are auditor-general’s investigations going back to the future?

YOURSAY | ‘Why is this report not classified under the OSA like the one on 1MDB?’

Auditors dig up suspicious dredging deal

Vijay47: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Najib Abdul Razak, Anwar Ibrahim or Lim Guan Eng, nobody is above the law and should there have been possibilities of corruption or other irregularities by them, they have to be held accountable and brought to trial.

While I do not intend in any way to defend anyone and in particular Mahathir, I am more than surprised that the auditor-general is looking into issues that happened 15 years.

One would have thought that this alleged act of corruption would have been examined by the auditor-general in 2003 or 2004. Are they doing the investigation only now? Why were these matters not scrutinised at the due time?

The auditor-general, who until now had some small respect from the Malaysian public, has with this outrageously delayed probe only smeared his good name and raised the possibility that like the other AG, has become a pawn to Najib's deviousness.

At the rate investigations are going back to the future, I suppose we can soon expect review of actions during the Japanese Occupation. Arigato.

6th Generation Immigrant: What this audit report actually reveals is that the auditor-general is also playing politics - then and now.

This particular Malaysian Maritime and Dredging Corporation Sdn Bhd (MMDC) event could and should have been audited years earlier, but it was not. Only God knows why.

For this to be audited years after the fact and specifically included in the current 2015 indicates lack of professionalism, credibility and total bias in the Audit Department.

This a reflection of the sad state of affairs in  Malaysia. Will the alleged wrongdoings of the current PM be only revealed in the 2025 Auditor-General's Report as this is how all the PMs get away with abuses - be it Mahathir, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi or Najib.

If: I thought showing delayed events only happened on our TV, but our auditor-general has picked up the 'trick' of the game very efficiently and unashamedly, even an event which occurred after a lapse of 15 years.

Ahmet Al Tarabulshit: Well, does it matter if it was under Mahathir or Abdullah? It was all done under Umno's tutelage.

Umno have allegedly been milking the country dry. Will the ringgit eventually be valued like a sheet of toilet paper?

Abasir: Now why does this belated ‘revelation’ have the nauseous odour of Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)?

On the other hand, if this is indeed a genuine finding of fact, does it mean that the auditors-general since 2002 were either grossly incompetent for not uncovering this or allegedly on the take?

Whatever the case may be, one thing is clear - every office touched by Umno is diseased.

Grey Matter: That's the norm in Malaysia, people with no experience are given projects at ridiculous rates. Look at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) joint venture on parking with an allegedly Umno-related company.

The public end up paying higher parking charges. Most of the toll roads were also allegedly given to cronies; that's why we pay higher tolls.

Why don't we start using Visapay instead of Touch ’n Go; that's another monopoly allegedly owned by a crony.

Goldee: Indeed, his whole thing about MMDC which happened 15 years is only brought forward now?

All the executives of the government then and present are as responsible as Dr M for the fiascos and scandals. The only executive who tried to oppose the plundering of the country's wealth is none other than Anwar.

He fought against corruption from within the system, but got sacked and jailed on trumped-up charges. It was corruption then and the monster has now grown to become a kleptocrat.

N1: I am sure that there are many more such contracts being awarded by the previous and current governments. If they cannot explain the reasons, they will just need to call that an ‘Arab donation’.

Dr M denies giving RM500m contract without cabinet approval

TimesAchanging: Let's not lose sight of the fact that all these actions, if true, were done when BN was in power.

So, if the public want to punish somebody, punish BN. You can see how ridiculous the argument becomes if they keep pointing to Dr M being bad to justify continuing to be bad.

Anonymous #19098644: What a joke, three years after leaving office, a contract is signed and the previous PM who had been put out to pasture is held accountable, while the incumbent who signed it is free of blame.

Umno and Najib are desperately grasping to all sorts of falsehoods, misrepresentations and outright slander to try and tear down their fiercest critic today.

The Analyser: It really doesn’t matter what Mahathir has done in the past, it’s what he might do in the future that is of concern.

There is no need to drag up more dirty linen from the past because any thinking person would realise there can be no future so long a man like him is still involved.

Myop101: Please charge Dr M in court then if it is true that he approved it without following the proper procurement procedures.

Similarly, we should also get the 1MDB audit report declassified and charge all who stole from the national coffers.

Swipenter: There is no difference in how Umno does business or award contracts to cronies in the past and present. If they are still in Putrajaya after GE14, it would be business as usual.

Odysseus: The contract is signed when Abdullah (Pak Lah) was the PM and finance minister. This sounds like the Malay peribahasa, "Gajah berjuang sama gajah, pelanduk mati di tengah."

Our dear, Pak Lah is the pelanduk here. Pity him. Well, this might be his wake-up call. Otherwise, he might be dragged into the battle of the two elephants.
