Former Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu has bought a mattress, pillow, blanket, towels and other basic supplies for detained Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

"They are all in Bersih colours, in yellow," he told Malaysiakini today.

Liu explained that since inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said yesterday that Maria could have asked for a mattress and other items, he is bringing them for the Bersih leader to take the police chief up on his word.

"The conditions in there (police detention facilities), Jinjang and elsewhere, are rundown," he added, explaining that this is why basic supplies and amenities be made available to Maria and other detainees.

"Just basic supplies, else people will accuse her of living like she is in a hotel," Liu said.

He said that he will bring all the items to Kem Batu, where he claimed Maria was being held, along with Bersih officers and Maria's family, so that they can arrange for her to receive the items.

Liu said that he will leave it to Bersih and Maria's family to decide when they want to arrange the trip.

"I hope that the IGP will honour his words," he said.

Liu said that he also plans to lodge a report with the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) over what he claimed is the "rundown" condition of police detention facilities, hoping that the commission can order cops to improve conditions and instruct police officers to be considerate to detainees.

Yesterday, Khalid denied that Maria was denied basic amenities in her solitary detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2016, adding that she was treated as well as all other detainees according to lock-up rules, and that she can ask for a mattress if she wanted one.

At present Maria told visitors, among other concerns, that she had to sleep on a wooden pallet, leading to critics calling it a case of mistreatment in detention.
