Holding Law Reform Act hostage exposes PAS’ desperation

YOURSAY | 'Is blackmail an ingrained thing in just you, or is it a part of PAS’ culture?

PAS: Non-Muslims must 'play fair' on Act 355 or else...

Aries46: Is this all what fairness and justice is about in Islam? A religion that claims non-compulsion?

It is in the public domain that unilateral conversion is not only cruel, intrusive and illegal but also destructive to non-Muslim families and unconstitutional in the original version of the constitution. A blatant travesty of the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act that governs non-Muslim marriages.

And as for the vehement objection by non-Muslims to Hadi's bill to advance Act 355, it is not only because it goes against the fabric and spirit of our secular constitution.

It's also because of past discrimination and intrusions such as unilateral conversions and the effects of syariah offences on non-Muslim cultures and businesses.

It is most ironic that PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan sees fit to threaten that if non-Muslims object to PAS violation of the constitution, it would in turn stand in the way of ending non-Muslim suffering due to illegal conversions.

Simply Best: “If they (non-Muslims) want to play that game, we (Muslims) can also go against proposed amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act,” PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said.

Is blackmail an ingrained thing in just you, or is it a part of PAS’ culture?

Isana: Threats, threats, threats. That's what happens when not-so-bright clerics can't get their way. It's not only non-Muslims, but progressive Muslims and East Malaysians who are not supportive of this bill. The federal constitution must rule supreme.

Malaccan: PAS' threats expose its fears that party president Abdul Hadi Awang's bill does not have the support it has always assumed it had.

PAS may hold itself to be representative of all Muslims, but the reality is that even its own members do not support its leaders and only those closest to the ideologies of the Taliban are doing so.

PAS can assume Umno has its component parties in BN in its pocket, but MCA, Gerakan or MIC have not mattered for a long time anyway.

Muslims have a better option in the quickly accepted and respected Amanah, whose leaders carry unassailable Muslim credentials equal or better than Hadi and his gang.

The proposed bill is not isolated to Muslims and they know it.

PAS hopes to Talibanise the country and think it can control the aftermath. They can't and will only bring ruin to everyone. Where is their vaunted consultation they were peddling not too long ago?

Right-thinking Malaysians, including Muslims, see the unprincipled injustice in holding the law reform as a negotiation chip for their bullying.

Oops: I am Muslim and I think the silent majority of Muslims including myself will forever oppose any move towards Talibanisation of our beloved Malaysia.

Hopeful123: PAS is playing a desperate game. It is the right of the non-Muslims to vote for or against the hudud amendments. There are even Muslims who would like to vote against it.

So what are you going to do about it? No sensible person will vote for the amendments. We non-Muslims do not want to see our Muslim brothers and sisters with missing limbs and caned like there is no tomorrow.

Civil law punishments are more than enough. What happens when someone loses his limbs only for the courts to find out later that he was not guilty? Can PAS give back the amputated limb in good working order?

In fact, all right-thinking Muslims must oppose this bill in all good sense. The late tok guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat would be turning in his grave for the stupidity of the present PAS leaders.

Senior Citizen: Hello, don't play the racial game here. You do not represent all Muslims. Even the Muslims objected to Abdul Hadi's Act 355 amendments.

By the way, when are you going to sue Sarawak Report for the RM90 million claim?

Well Thats Fantastic: To PAS from a Muslim, please stop trying to enforce our religion. When you enforce religion, you cause all to become faithless. Your duty on earth is to make sure you obey, not to make others obey.

Kamikasi: Don't these dumb and numb skulls ever get it into their heads that hudud is not suitable for this country, and non-Muslims will continue to object?

They want to live peaceful lives with sensible laws that they can understand. We are civilised human beings and do not need archaic laws to cover us. Period.

Atlantis: The trouble is once you imposed the hudud law, you will slowly spread to non-Muslim area. Just look at Kelantan.

Anonymous_1430213195: Are you sure you have not interfered with non-Muslims' way of living? No Valentine's Day, no disco, no entertainment, no concerts, no cinema, blah, blah, blah.

Restaurants should close during Friday prayer time.

The A-liar: Takiyuddin, let me ask you in return, will you then respect gay rights and recognise that we need equality with legalising same sex marriage for non-Muslims?

The law doesn't apply to Muslims, so what's the problem? Let's have same sex marriage too if you plan to invade everybody's life with your nonsense.

Gggg: PAS, when the constitution was amended in the past and non-Muslims were told it would not affect them, in the end it did affect many non-Muslims.

Ask the widow of the late Everest climber sergeant M Moorthy, and divorced mothers S Shamala and Indira Gandhi and others. Did you defend those non-Muslims when they were affected by Islamic laws?

Now you know why non-Muslims are objecting. It is always not good to have two systems of punishment in one country.

Xiao Zhu: Many citizens in this country are not fools or ‘sentiasa makan dedak’, or use religion for self-interest.

Can you clearly type and state in the Act 355 amendments that this Act is totally not applicable to non-Muslims? Then again, we don't want our Muslim friends to be bullied either, by a no-hope party.

Jaguh: Well one thing is for sure - politics and religion are like oil and water. They cannot mix; if they do then we get all muddled up like our friends from PAS.
