PAS joins Umno at Rohingya rally; Dr M joins DAP at AGM

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief

Umno-PAS join hands for Rohingyas

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and other top Umno leaders stand shoulder-to-shoulder with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and PAS leaders at a 10,000-strong gathering in Kuala Lumpur to protest violence against the Rohingya community in Myanmar.

Najib said Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi refused to meet Foreign Minister Anifah Aman on the Rohingya issue.

Rohingya associations in Kuala Lumpur laud Najib for his show of solidarity but former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad questioned why the prime minister needed to joined a demonstration when he could take action.

PKR also urges the government to immediately grant the Rohingyas refugee status and to pressure Myanmar through Malaysia's position in the United Nations Security Council.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Counsultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) said it will be filing a suit against Myanmar at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged genocide of the Rohingya community.

Dr M attends DAP convention

Dr Mahathir makes a surprise appearance at the DAP convention, prompting DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng to say in his policy speech there are no permanent foes in politics.

However, there are signs of wariness among the DAP grassroots over the alliance with Mahathir with one delegate from Penang quitting while the late DAP chairperson Karpal Singh's daughter Sangeet Kaur Deo urges the party to check the principles of its allies.

DAP's acting chairperson Tan Kok Wai says DAP is unperturbed by Umno's allegations that it is anti-Islam and that Malays will lose out if DAP comes into power.

However, Lim made it a point to state that the party never sought the position of prime minister and supports PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as Pakatan Harapan's PM candidate.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin also comes to its ally's defence by assuring Malays that DAP is not out for the top post, or to erode Malay rights.

Other Kinibites

PAS stresses again that it is not cooperating with Umno, and that Umno's presence at the Rohingya rally was because it wanted to keep up with the Islamist party. It adds that there is no seat negotiation with Umno.

Looking ahead

The Syariah Court of Appeal will deliver its verdict in the qazaf case involving Anwar.
