A group of 30 held a peaceful rally outside the High Court in Penang today to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for the two corruption charges against him.

Calling themselves Persatuan Penyokong Mamu Parpu, the group led by Muhsin Latheef said they preferred state executive councillor and Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow to take over from Lim.

"We want to know what the Penang government is doing about the floods.

"State government leaders only quote figures, but we do not know what exactly is being spent and where the locations for flood mitigations works are going to be carried out," Muhsin said.

The group is not satisfied with the state's handling of the recent massive flash floods in Penang due to heavy downpours.

The group is expecting Lim to be present at the High Court for the second mention of his corruption case.

Lim may not come to court

However, it is learnt that Lim may not attend today's session. His lawyers Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) and RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) are present in court.

Across the street from the courthouse on Light Street, the group carried banners, chanting slogans such as "Resign Guan Eng", "Solve the flood problems, don't blame others" and "Guan Eng can't help us, let Chow take over".

Lim has said Chow would take over his post as CM if he goes to jail on his corruption charges filed in June by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In June, Lim was charged with corruption and abuse of power under Section 23 of the MACC Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code.

On the first charge, Lim is accused of abusing his position when he chaired the Penang planning committee in July 2014 to approve the rezoning of land in Mukim J, Daerah Barat Daya, from agricultural to housing, in favour of Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd.

Businesswoman Phang Li Khoon has a 30 percent stake in Magnificent Emblem.

Phang also happens to be Lim's landlord and his wife's associate.

Lim denied that Phang has benefitted from the re-zoning as it was rejected by the Penang Island City Council last December.

The second charge involves Lim's purchase of a two-storey bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn for RM2.8 million from Phang, at allegedly below market price, in July 2015.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, insists that the purchase was on a willing buyer-willing seller basis.

He has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the charges were trumped up and were meant to end his political career.
