AMANAH AGM Islamic law is not just about punishing sinners, but also Orang Asli land rights, the Amanah national convention was told today.

Che Ibrahim Muhammad said Muslims cannot just push for amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355), but only refer to secular laws when it concerns Orang Asli land rights.

"We push for acceptance of the Act 355 amendments simply to punish adultery and drinking alcohol, in accordance to Islam.

"But at the same time we deny the rights of the Orang Asli to own and occupy land," Che Ibrahim said.

Recently, the plight of the Termiar community in Gua Musang gained mainstream attention following their erection of blockades to prevent loggers from encroaching into what they claim as their native land.

Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob has denied claims that his administration marginalises the Orang Asli community, but he was against the blockades and acts of civil disobedience.

He said the government had earlier gazetted 973 hectares of land as reserves for the Orang Asli and another 19,000 hectares for them to forage.
