Voter Za'aba Ibrahim is facing bankruptcy for failing to pay the RM50,000 legal costs ordered by the court after an election petition for the Pulai seat failed.

Za'aba, 45, said he would be declared bankrupt if he does not pay by Jan 17 next year.

The welder said he agreed to be a plaintiff for PAS' petition on the 2013 general election results of the parliamentary seat as PAS agreed to settle all legal costs.

“It’s funny, PAS said they cannot help me because I’m not a PAS member.

“They had close to two years to pay the legal costs, yet they left me to my own (devices) because they think I’m a small fry,” the Amanah member told Malaysiakini in a telephone interview.

The Federal Court dismissed the appeal to nullify the Pulai election result on Jan 27, 2014, while Za’aba left PAS only on Sept 1, 2015.

When contacted, PAS Johor chief Mahfodz Mohamed confirmed the party would not assist Za’aba as he was no longer a PAS member.

"He is no longer a PAS member, so why should we help him? If he was, we would have paid," Mahfodz said when contacted.

He said PAS paid legal costs for its failed election petition for Nusajaya.

PAS candidate Salahuddin Ayub lost the Pulai seat to BN's Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

Salahuddin is now deputy president of Amanah, a PAS splinter party.

Amanah organising secretary Suhaizan Kaiat said Amanah is trying to assist Za’aba and had raised RM11,000 in public donations so far.

“We are targeting to reach RM50,000. PAS doesn’t want to help him, so we’re (Amanah) trying to,” he said.
