Shahrir Abdul Samad has been named the new Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairperson in line with the government’s aspiration to strengthen the agency's leadership.

Shahrir is the Johor Bahru Member of Parliament.

He replaces Mohd Isa Abdul Samad whose term has ended, but remains chairperson of Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV).

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in a statement today said under the restructuring, there is a division of responsibilities towards settlers’ welfare and socio-economic status and Felda’s business.

Shahrir has wide experience in government administration and was formerly a minister for three different ministries.

He also previously held the post of Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairperson and was chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee.

“I express my appreciation to Mohd Isa for his service to Felda since taking over as chairperson in 2011,” Najib said.

Najib said under the leadership of Mohd Isa, Felda had facilitated many community activities and programmes to improve the quality of life of the settlers and their families.

He said Mohd Isa, who has completed his term as Felda chairman, would continue to hold his position as chairperson of Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd.

“Under this arrangement, there will be division of responsibility for the welfare and socio-economy of settlers and Felda’s businesses," said the prime minister.
