KL kapcai ban; ‘leakages’ in Felda; Dr M-Johor Sultan powwow

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

KL kapcai ban

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s proposal to ban lower-powered motorcycles from entering the Kuala Lumpur city centre proves that the BN government’s policies burden the people, said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

Meanwhile, Federal Territories PAS Youth argued that It is unfair to ban ‘kapcai’ or motorcycles between 50 to 150cc from downtown Kuala Lumpur if the national capital’s public transport system is still not comprehensive nor cost effective.

Weighing in on the issue, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar disagrees with the proposal, questioning if banning kapcais from downtown Kuala Lumpur will really reduce carbon emissions, noting that big lorries have far larger carbon footprints.

‘Leakages’ in Felda

Felda chairperson Shahrir Samad admitted that there are “leakages” in the federal agency, more specifically in investment arm Felda Investment Corporation Sdn Bhd (FIC), which is why it is now forced to look for extra earnings to absorb its losses.

To do this, Shahrir said the agency will liquidate a hotel it owns in London which has depreciated rapidly in value, as well as look to dispose more under-performing offshore assets.

Meanwhile PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said the Felda chairperson was being evasive by dismissing the numbers he provided with regard to Felda Global Ventures (FGV) and its supposed delisting exercise.

Dr M-Johor Sultan powwow

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar should meet over the Forest City project in the state and the construction firms from China who are developing it, to find common ground in their disagreement over the matter, proposed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth.

Mahathir had earlier penned a letter in response to Sultan Ibrahim who accused the former prime minister of crossing the line with his remarks, explaining that he is only repeating foreign reports on Forest City, and that he is prepared to face any consequence.

Meanwhile, Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi has challenged Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to declare his loyalty to the ruler of his home state of Johor, or the former premier.

More Kinibites

Kuala Lumpur police said the son of deputy minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman was part of the identification parade related to the assault on Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad on Parliament grounds, denying Khalid's claim that none of the “main players” in the ambush against him on Parliament grounds on Nov 24 last year, were part of the line-up.

The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) has set up a new cybersecurity centre, the Cyber Defence Operation Centre (CDOC) which would come fully online in September, to protect military digital networks.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said has reminded civil servants to be more careful about what they post on their social media. This is after a photo of her in what appeared to be a casino in Las Vegas, which she posted privately on her Instagram, went viral and drew brickbats from netizens.

Looking ahead

The appeal by Anwar Ibrahim and his family against the Pardons Board’s rejection of his petition for a royal pardon over his sodomy conviction will be heard at the Court of Appeal today.
