New Navy vessels depend on gov't's approval

The process to acquire the Multirole Support Ships (MRSS) still has a long way to go, said Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin.

He said that the plan to purchase the MRSS was part of the RMN programme in reducing their fleet size from 15 to five, however it depended on the approval or capability of the government.

"Our next project after the LMS (Littoral Mission Ships) will be the MRSS which is part of the plan. However, the acquisition depends on the approval of the government," he said.

The Royal Malaysian Navy is reducing its fleet size from 15 to five classes of vessels, where old ships which are too expensive to maintain, would be retired and sold.

The money would be used to purchase new vessels and the navy was set to have 18 Littoral Mission Ships and six Littoral Combat Ships in the future.
