YOURSAY | ‘The opposition has been disappointing and found wanting, but it is still the better alternative...’

Hope fades, perhaps opposition need to be taught a lesson

Limfly: I am not sure if Bersih secretariat member Mandeep is saying all this with tongue-in-cheek or perhaps attempting to provoke a reaction from the readers.

My question is: If we were to teach the opposition a lesson, what would be the outcome? More of the same from Umno-BN. And we don't need to spell out what that "same" means. In fact, it will embolden them to be even more brazen.

Mandeep, do you want that? I don't. I agree that the opposition has been disappointing and found wanting, but it is still the better alternative for Malaysia.

Responsible Malaysian: Yes, the opposition parties have their problems. But which opposition parties do not have their problems when they have never governed the nation before.

It is delusion to expect a perfect replacement. A good enough government can only be achieved with the determination to change for better through the will of the rakyat.

If people get frustrated so easily, then let the deterioration runs its course. Eventually, you will have to accept the consequences.

By the way, people can force the ruling government to change but seemingly, the current government lacks the will. People can get the replacement and force the replacement to perform.

Fight hard and you will have hope. Give up and you are doomed.

Mosquitobrain: Cold water, once a while, will refresh and wake you up. I am optimistic Pakatan Harapan with PPBM (Bersatu) will rise to the occasion.

The present weak, inefficient, insincere and kleptocratic government needs to be thrown out. They do not care or neither have time to tackle hardships faced by the people caused by escalating cost of daily essentials.

To add salt to injury, they're adjusting RON 95 petrol at their whim and fancy. Indeed, the present RON 95 petrol (pump price) should not be more than RM2.00 per litre (Based on crude petroleum US$56.00 per barrel @ RM4.45/litre).

Anonymous_1424794168: Well written, Mandeep Singh. We are tired. Opposition leaders turned out to be just the same if not worse, but in different clothing.

In all fairness, I see bright hopes in Selangor MB Azmin Ali and there are really good guys in DAP and PKR. But their time is not here yet.

Anonymous #13114320: Mandeep, while you raised good points about opposition parties, isn’t that also the same with BN parties?

Infighting is our human nature and it will remain so unless one day we are all governed by robots or humanoid. There is never 100 percent pureness in any politics, especially once one gains more power.

It is a case of being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Will you make your choice now and continue with the government at hand and hoping someone in your children’s time will find a better government?

Hardboiled: I had a social get-together with six Chinese youths recently. Outside, at another table was a political philosophical discussion amongst an older crowd.

As I sat and eavesdropped, I thought to share what I heard. One youth said to me, "Better not to complain and do nothing, then to complain and do nothing."

I was a little surprised to hear it. So then I said, "Well, the least we can do is join Bersih and vote." Utter silence.

So I asked, "Have you guys been to Bersih?" To which all replied that they had not been to any of the Bersih rallies. I was then compelled to ask about voting. None planned to. These are working executives in banks, oil and gas, and IT.

So, yes, this article highlights a very apparent lack of hope, even amongst the urban Chinese youths. I agree that BN will win this GE14.

But I will play my part in ensuring every youth I can engage to vote for the opposition. To oppose the corrupt regime is a victory in itself. We vote to win the war even when we have lost so many battles.

Drngsc: Mandeep, please keep your opinion to yourself. You have not done the work to see how much effort has been put into winning the GE14. Go do your homework before casting wrong omens.

However, I would submit that the final outcome can only be known the day of GE14, but you are thoroughly wrong that the turnout will be poor.

You are even more wrong to confirm that change is impossible. Change is in the air, and Umno knows it.

We all wish that you will join us to save Malaysia from these cheats and kleptocracts. You may have to eat your words soon.

KSD: Mandeep, this must have been written at a time when you felt totally down and depressed. Everyone have such moments, even leaders like Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

But leaders and ordinary people react differently to such moments. A true leader will never give up. He or she will fight to the end, no matter how outnumbered he is, and how high the obstacles.

The road from 1998 is littered with leaders who gave up. You can choose to join them or you can get up and lead us again.

The number of voters that are ready for change is rising every day. Sure, some politicians will succumb to their baser inclinations, but there are enough good ones out there to bring down the current regime.

It's fine if you want to leave the battle. I hope you don't, but if you do decide to give up, it would be appreciated if you don't give bullets to the other side.

Abasir: If Malaysiakini readers are forced to place their bets on which of the two is likely to emerge winner in the next GE, where would they put their money?

On the highly-corrupt regime backed by a shamelessly subservient civil service and a loaded electoral "system" or an opposition hopelessly divided by race and religion and without the siren call of a nationally respected, unifying personality?
