The government today launched a website to help the public detect fake news. 

Communications and Mulitmedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said 'sebenarnya.my' has nothing to do with the upcoming 14th general election. 

"The purpose is to provide a one-stop centre where one can check if the news is false or not...

"Fake news is an issue all over the country. Even the opposition can use this portal if they find incorrect news about them online. 

"This portal does not belong to the government, it belongs to the people so everyone should use it to the fullest," he told reporters in Cyberjaya. 

Through sebernarnya.my, users can check the if the news they receive through social media, SMS or other websites are true. 

They can do so by reporting the news item to the sebenarnya.my team at http://sebenarnya.my/ which will then check if the news item is true. 

To date, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia and Commission (MCMC) has detected some 1,000 fake news items circulating in Malaysia, Salleh said.
