A motion to condemn Umno’s Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya will be filed in the coming Penang state legislative assembly in May, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

He said the move is for all state representatives to make a stand on Shabudin who courted media attention when he said victims could marry her rapist.

Lim added that anger prevails among women, and the motion hopes to seek justice for the victims of rape.

“We are doing it as a state government which loves, respects and wants to protect women,” he said at a press conference today.

“We regret that BN’s top leadership has failed to act against Shabudin. He has no respect for rape victims and worse, he is not serious about the crime of rape."

Lim wants state opposition leader and Penang Umno wanita chief Jahara Hamid to make a stand over Shabudin’s remarks in the Dewan Negeri.

“Up to now she has not condemned him, but instead stood by him, and she is a woman,” he added.

'Resign or be sacked'

Shabudin has clarified that he was referring to statutory rape when making the statement, and has blamed the media for taking his words on child marriages “out of context”.

Despite his clarification, Lim said the call for Shabudin to resign or be sacked from Umno and BN will continue.

“By trying to deny the undeniable, Shabudin has committed two wrongs, for saying (the remarks) and for denying it,” he said.

Lim said child marriages should not be sanctioned, and to his knowledge, it is not allowed even in Islam.

“Especially when it is equated with a way out for rapists whom he (Shabudin) said may regret his actions and turn over a new leaf. How do you know he (rapist) can be a good husband to the victim; that itself is wrong,” he added.
