A DAP state assemblyperson has reiterated his stand that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng should step down pending his trial.

On the same note, Teh Yee Cheu clarified media reports which suggested that he would back the motion by Umno to be tabled at the state assembly sitting in May.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, the Tanjung Bungah assemblyperson said this has always been his stand.

“If they (Umno) want to table a motion, it is up to them. I did not say I would support it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Star Online quoted Teh as stating that relinquishing his post would be the right thing for Guan Eng to do.

"At least he should go on temporary leave until the case is over. The chief minister has been charged with corruption and as such he should step aside for investigations to continue smoothly," he said.

In November 2015, Teh had supported a motion by Pulau Betong Umno assemblyperson Muhammad Farid Saad who urged for public hearings for land reclamation and the suspension of all new reclamation until oceanic, environmental and social impact studies to be carried out.

Teh later apologised to the party for supporting the motion.

During the meeting in May last year, he brought up a motion to amend the state constitution to limit the Penang chief minister's term to two terms but was rejected by state assembly speaker Law Choo Kiang.

Teh said he would not table the motion again since Umno was proposing to table a motion against Lim.

Meanwhile, Guan Eng has claimed that the two corruption charges against him were part of a plot against him, which the authorities have denied.
