An opposition party today filed a report with the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) urging it to probe the alleged dealings between several police officers and fugitive Michael Soosai.

In the report, PKR Youth vice chief M Manikavasagam included the names of nine officers who were allegedly involved.

The names were obtained from a website , which had extensively detailed the links between Soosai and several police personnel, including federal CID deputy director Mokthar Hassan.

Apart from receiving large amounts of bribes, the officers were also alleged to be involved in Soosai's criminal network and even 'rented-out' classified government documents such as copies of police exhibits to a foreign press agency.

Soosai, who is wanted in connection of various crimes ranging from fraud to murder, is currently believed to be in India. He had allegedly left Malaysia after faking his death.

"We want an independent body, like the ACA, to conduct investigations into the matter. The police themselves must not conduct the investigations as it involves them ," said Manikavasagam when met later.

Manikavasagam, who was accompanied by party member Tan Soi Kow, lodged the report at the ACA Kuala Lumpur headquarters.

Currently the investigation into the allegations on the site - registered in India - and the officers involved is being conducted by a task-force headed by the federal anti-narcotics department deputy director, Ismail Omar.

Suspend them

However, Manikavasagam was dissatisfied that the police team tasked to locate Soosai is headed by Mokthar , who himself is one of those accused of having dealings with the fugitive.

"That cannot be allowed. Why is he heading the team? He (the officer) has been named in the site as receiving bribes (when he was a district police chief)," he said.

In his report, a copy of which was made available to malaysiakini, the PKR leader urged Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to intervene in the case.

He also called on Deputy Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan to temporarily suspend the officers linked to the case pending the outcome of investigations.

"Last week it was announced that over 20 officers involved in the case were transferred from their posts (to various divisions nationwide). That is not enough. Musa must suspend them," he said.

Manikavasagam also wanted answers from the deputy police chief as to whose body was pronounced as that of the 'dead' Soosai - and how the police cleared the death - if he is now strongly believed to be alive.

Meanwhile, PKR also wanted the ACA to probe into allegations of torture and abuse of members of Soosai's family by the police.
