Muslims will fast during daylight hours for a month starting tomorrow.

The Keeper of the Royal Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad announced that the month of Ramadan starts on May 27, Bernama reported.

The date is agreed upon by the Conference of Rulers, following the sighting of the new moon at around dusk today.

Later this evening, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak sent his “Happy Ramadan al-Mubarak” wishes to all Muslims in Malaysia, who would start fasting tomorrow.

Najib also prayed for the country to continue to be showered with blessings of Allah during the holy month of Ramadan.

"Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), the most awaited month is finally here upon us. The arrival of the Ramadan al-Mubarak is indeed spiritually meaningful for all Muslims in Malaysia and all over the world," he said in his Ramadan message posted on his blog najibrazak.com, as well as his Twitter and Facebook page tonight.

Najib said Ramadan is special because it was during Ramadan that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad as a guidance for Muslims, and it is also the month of opportunity for all Muslims to gain great rewards by fasting, performing Terawih prayers at night, being patient and steadfast for 30 days.

The nightly feasts during the breaking of fast, he said, had also become a tradition celebrated among the multi-racial society in Malaysia.
