Electrician charged with using fake cash to buy food

An electrician pleaded not guilty at the Ampang Sessions Court to two counts of using counterfeit RM100 notes to buy food at two food outlets last week.

On the first count, Hairul Anuar Badruddin, 31, was alleged to have committed the offence at the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Crunchy stall in Jalan Kosas 1/3, Taman Kosas, Ampang Jaya here at 5.59 pm, on June 13, while the second count, at Restoran Abdullah Maju, also in Taman Kosas here, at 3.04 pm, on the same day.

Both the charges were made under Section 489B of the Penal Code which provides a maximum 20-year jail sentence and fine upon conviction.

When asked by Judge Azrul Darus where he obtained the fake notes from, the accused said he got it as a cash prize after winning a video game contest at a video game centre in Ampang.

"I didn't know the notes were counterfeit. I've never seen a fake note before. I got it after winning a video game contest at a video game centre...and I used it to buy food," Hairul Anuar told the court, appealing to be allowed bail as he was the breadwinner for his wife, three children, mother and a sibling.

The court allowed the accused, who was not represented, bail of RM6,000 for each charge in one surety and fixed July 21 for remention of case.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadiah Malek Fauzie prosecuted.
