MOE, Perkasa step in on BM waiver drama; 'CJ extension unlawful'

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

MOE, Perkasa step in on BM waiver issue

The Ministry of Education will assist medical graduates without SPM certificate to sit for the Bahasa Malaysia paper only, so they will not have to sit for all six core subjects in order to qualify to be house officers.

Meanwhile, Malay rights group Perkasa sent a letter of demand to the Health Ministry seeking for it to rescind the waiver on the SPM certification in BM for those hired on contract for the compulsory public service house officer training.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman also urged the Health Ministry to accept other certifications to prove BM proficiency, besides SPM, as the purpose is just to ensure the graduates are adept in BM.

Unconstitutional to extend Justice Raus' term, says former CJ

Former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad has argued that a further extension to the tenure of Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif after the 66 years and six months of his age, would be unconstitutional, and could lead to an awkward position where the CJ's legitimacy can be challenged in court.

Abdul Hamid said Article 125(1) of the Federal Constitution states that a judge of the Federal Court shall hold office until he attains the age of 66 years or such later time, not being later than six months after he attains that age, as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may approve.

Hamid said the provision stated in no uncertain terms that the mandatory retirement age of a judge of the Federal Court (including the CJ) should be when he or she attains the age of 66 years.
