A 41-year-old woman who has been arrested for allegedly insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V in a Facebook posting has denied uploading the photo in question onto the social media platform.

Lawyer Vince Tan said his client Catterine Chong, who goes by the name Catt Ginger on Facebook, suspected she was being framed for reporting another individual’s indecent online behaviour.

The individual is to be charged in the Ampang Sessions Court tomorrow for threatening to “kill Chinese people and rape a Chinese woman” and Chong is expected to be called as a witness, according to Vince.

“The reason Catt suspects (the individual of framing her) is because she had lodged a police report against him because he posted something provocative on Facebook, saying that he wanted to kill Chinese people and rape a Chinese woman, as my client had said.

“Therefore my client lodged a police report against the individual, which resulted in him being detained and to be charged in court. My client is suggesting that he is probably behind all these cyber attacks on her,” Vince told a press conference in Setapak today.

Vince also revealed that his client, who is an animal funeral handler, had received multiple death threats and harassing phone calls after the photo of the Agong went viral.

Chong will be charged under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 and will be remanded until tomorrow.

According to Vince, Chong had earlier lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police over the matter.

However, these did not stop the attacks on her as one blogger has publicised her personal details such as phone number, real name, and address. 

Chief of the Women Development Organisation of Malaysia (WDO) Tan Yee Kew weighed in on the issue, criticising the blogger's action. 

Yew Kee said Chong, is a member of the WDO and sought help from her after the doctored photo went viral. 

“Since a blogger had accused Catt Ginger of insulting the Agong and has published her name, handphone number, and home address...the police should investigate it,” added Yew Kew. 

She also slammed a news portal which published the news without seeking any clarification from Chong.

It is alleged that Chong had uploaded a photograph of the Agong with a pig snout on it.
