Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah lodged a police report after her car’s driver side window was smashed as she was driving this afternoon.

“I was driving to go to a meeting, just turning from (Bersih) office down (in Petaling Jaya) to the Federal Highway.

“It happened so fast, somebody just smashed the driver’s window, while I was moving. Something hit my window and then it just cracked,” she said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

As she was concentrating on the road and the window was cracked after it was hit, she said she could not see who or what caused the crack.

The incident happened at about 5.20pm, she said.

Maria said she has been receiving odd text messages and phone calls the past few days from unknown numbers.

This includes calls where no one speaks on the line and the caller hangs up after a few seconds, she said.

She also received one of such calls soon after the incident, she said.

Even her son has been receiving such text messages and phone calls, she added.

“I do hope that it is (just) an accident, but it does not look like an accident because there were no lorries carrying sand or stones near me,” she said.

Act of cowardice

Speaking to reporters after lodging the report at the Kelana Jaya, she said an abusive call was also made to the Bersih office earlier today.

"Today, before the incident someone called the office and shouted bodoh (stupid) to one of my staff," she said.

Labelling today's incident as an "act of cowardice", Maria said she is pessimistic that police will take action over this matter.

This is especially since she did not spot the perpetrator.

Maria previously lodged police reports over various threats, including a threat of decapitation against her, her sons, Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh and former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

"Three death threats and various police reports have been made by Maria but we have no information on them to date, except for one lodge against (BN-linked NGO leader Mohd Ali Baharom) who (allegedly) said she will not walk on this earth again.

"That was classified as 'No Further Action', and we found that out through a reply in Parliament.

"Are our lives so cheap and worthless? Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar needs to answer this," Mandeep, who accompanied Maria to the police station, said.

He added that police were swift in detaining Maria under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act following the Bersih rally last November, and have questioned Bersih staff on vigils held for Maria at the time but are sluggish on threats against Bersih.

Maria said there are 119 police investigations against Bersih.

"I don't know how fighting for clean and fair election can lead to this harassment," she said.
